SEO expectations
How long does SEO take, and what should you see along the way?
A practical way to discuss SEO progress without being sold an instant ranking or an arbitrary deadline.
The useful bit
Agree milestones for the work and review evidence of progress. A launch date for a page is not a deadline for Google to rank it or for customers to enquire.
Your starting point changes the answer
An established business with useful pages may need a different plan from a new website with little information. Competition, search demand, existing visibility and the scale of technical problems all affect the opportunity. Access to your website and speed of factual approval affect delivery too. We review those conditions before discussing realistic milestones, rather than applying one timeline to every business.
Separate completed work from business results
A corrected contact detail or a published service page is evidence that a task is finished. Search visibility, relevant traffic and qualified enquiries are separate outcomes. A useful report distinguishes those stages. It should explain what has changed, what is being watched and which decisions depend on more evidence. Counting completed tasks alone does not tell you whether the marketing is helping.
Look for progress in the right order
First establish that important pages can be found and used, that the business information is accurate and that the contact route works. Then look for relevant search visibility and visits to priority services. Finally connect those visits to suitable enquiries and quoted or won work where the data allows. The stages overlap, and not every business will see a neat upward line.
Account for quiet periods and seasonal work
A roofer and a landscaper may experience different demand patterns. A short comparison can make normal seasonality look like success or failure. Look at comparable periods where data exists and record changes in services, staffing, opening hours and campaigns. If the numbers are small, individual customer conversations may tell you more than a dramatic percentage change.
Keep the plan accountable
Agree when you will review the work and what would justify changing direction. Slow progress should lead to investigation, not an indefinite request for patience. If your priority is filling immediate capacity, a separate paid campaign may be worth assessing. It still needs a suitable offer, sensible limits and measurement. At owt, we discuss the trade-offs before recommending a mix.
Common questions
Can you promise results within a set number of days?
We can agree delivery milestones for defined work. We cannot promise a ranking, enquiry total or sales result by a fixed date.
What happens if SEO is not producing useful enquiries?
Review visibility, search intent, landing pages, measurement and follow-up together. The next action should follow the evidence, which may mean changing priorities or the channel mix.
