AI search

Does your business still need SEO in an AI search world?

Why clear service information, original experience and a usable website remain a sensible foundation as search changes.

The useful bit

Make your business easy for people and systems to understand. Useful content can support discovery, but no agency can guarantee that an AI answer will recommend you.

Customers still need an accurate answer

Whether someone types a short phrase or asks a longer question, they still need to establish who can do the work. Your business name, services, coverage and contact route should be unambiguous. If your website describes three different versions of the offer, a person or an automated system has to resolve the contradiction. Keeping a clear source of truth is practical marketing work.

Google's guidance still starts with SEO

Google's generative AI guidance says foundational SEO remains relevant to its AI search features. It emphasises useful, distinctive content and rejects the idea that special AI text files are a requirement for visibility. That is guidance for Google's systems, not a promise about every AI product. A separately configured business assistant can use your content in a different way.

Put your experience into the explanation

A service description becomes more useful when it explains the jobs you take on, the questions customers ask and the evidence you can show. For a specialist installer, that might mean explaining the assessment process and the boundaries of the work. Use real project details you can verify. An article assembled from generic definitions gives readers little reason to choose your business.

Make answers complete enough to stand alone

A customer may enter through an individual guide rather than your homepage. Give each page enough context to explain its topic and link to the relevant service. Define unfamiliar terms, identify examples as examples and make dates clear where information changes. This helps readers follow the argument and gives a knowledge system a better source to retrieve from.

Keep discovery and your own assistant separate

Publishing a website does not automatically train an AI model, connect a sales assistant or authorise it to make commitments. For your own assistant, provide current business facts and test its answers against approved information. At owt, our website explains the services and the next step. Bespoke scope and commercial commitments still need to match an agreed proposal, regardless of how a customer first finds us.
